Flash 55 – Drill, Baby, Drill

Bid adieu, Louisiana, to your manic mistress
Say "hello", Mississippi, to lonesome jubilees
Turn out the lights the party’s over,Gulf Shores Alabama
The pungent smell of oil drifts on the ocean breeze

Run, Forest, run as fast as you can…

What will Jimmy sing about now that
the Gulf of Mexico has lost its Ya-Ya?

Tell a story in 55 words. Go see the g-man for more.

(My friend, Jamie, who lives in Mobile, told me about “Jubilee”, a natural phenomenon that occurs sporadically on the shores of Mobile Bay. During a jubilee many species of crab and shrimp, as well as flounder, eels, and other demersal fish will leave deeper waters and swarm—in large numbers and very high density—in a specific, shallower coastal area of the bay. A jubilee is a celebrated event in Mobile Bay, and it attracts large crowds, many drawn by the promise of abundant and easy-to-catch seafood. Although similar events have been reported in other bodies of water, Mobile Bay is the only place where the regular appearance of this phenomenon has been documented.) Wikipedia

And sad and painfully tragic tale. Beautifully told in 55.

My 55 is up (though it's a "66" today ~ I granted myself an exception):

This is wonderful and tragic. Thank you for broadening my horizons and telling me about the jubilee. I never heard of that. One more thing to feel afraid for with the oil spill...

Very good 55! What a mess, though. I want to cry every time I think about not only the human tragedy, but the wildlife tragedy. They know what it's like to lose their homes and lives, too.

Sad tragic tale but beautifully written!

This appalling nightmare won't end. What have we in our greed and haste and hubris done to this body of water-to this world? It is frightening, sickening, sad.

If only Jimmy's joyful, spirited music had been enough to prevent such abuse. But no.... Another era has passed.

Thanks for your post. It's difficult for me to discuss. This is happening in the backyard of where I grew up.

This situation is so tragic. But your hommage to it is just the opposite. Well done!
