Flash 55–Childhood Sweethearts

(I had originally planned to post this on another day but decided to use something different instead. I thought I’d see how close I was to a Flash 55, and when I counted the words it was right on so I'm going for it. See other Flash 55 stories here.)

The Last Holiday of Summer (Wave Goodbye)

Boats bob in the harbor

bidding adieu to the balmy days of summer

with all its pretty baubles, bangles and beads,

and boisterous weekdays;

believing that Fall, boasting brash fiery colors,

and brisk morning walks, comes soon

surely to be followed by winter’s belligerent blustery winds.

“Boo hoo!” bawl the boats.

As do we all.

Today/Tomorrow

 I remember (not so long ago) when we were full of spit and vinegar never thinking past tomorrow.

Now young families walk past me like we did once - not beat up or showing purple bruises yet.

Today I saw their future and realized for the first time that we are no longer in it.

(My friend, Jamie, who lives in Mobile, told me about “Jubilee”, a natural phenomenon that occurs sporadically on the shores of Mobile Bay. During a jubilee many species of crab and shrimp, as well as flounder, eels, and other demersal fish will leave deeper waters and swarm—in large numbers and very high density—in a specific, shallower coastal area of the bay. A jubilee is a celebrated event in Mobile Bay, and it attracts large crowds, many drawn by the promise of abundant and easy-to-catch seafood. Flash 55 – Empty Nest

It seemed like only yesterday she encouraged them to spread their wings, followed their crooked flight nervously, then watched them soar with pride. Gone is the noisy chatter as they returned with tales of their adventures. She even misses the frenzied feedings. Next Spring they’ll be having children of their own. Time to move on.
