Simple Things

Waking up with no alarm clock,
Sleepy still but waking. Slow.
No need to jump up today. Don't hurry.

Stumbling to the kitchen to make coffee,
Eyes half closed - I could do it in my sleep
And have done so many times, but not today.

Steam rises from the cup cradled inside my hands
Like I'm holding something fragile.
A treasure, priceless and obscene.

The first sip slides across my tongue and down my throat.
I hear the whir of the laptop as it comes to life
Much easier than I do.

I greet the day and meet my friends
From down the block or half a world away. Hello. Good night.
Wherever they are, they are safe and warm like me.

Life is complicated, but thank goodness
For simple weekends.

Today and Sunday, Enchanted Oak would  like to celebrate the simple pleasures of life with you. For each person who participates with a list, a poem, or a prose piece about the joy of simple things, their  family will donate $2.00 to Heartline Ministries for their medical clinic and other programs in Haiti.

Tracy, this was a wonderful read on a lazy Sunday morning. I was right there with you, feeling the simple joy. Got hungry while reading your chicken sandwich recipe. Now I need to go refresh my wonderful coffee and say thanks for people like you who are mindful. Be blessed today, dear girl.
