The Wooden Fence

Another one of my favorite bloggers is Chris over at Enchanted Oak. She writes some of the most thought provoking posts, and on Friday she posted a quote that rattled around inside my head all day.

“Throw your heart over the fence and the rest will follow.”
- Norma Vincent Peale

The mere thought of this is not an easy thing for a Capricorn like me. I've tried it maybe a handful of times in my life. Sometimes it worked out and other times it didn't. I've done it on occasion because I chose it and other times because I felt like my hand had been forced.

Risks are defined inside each of us, in a place we are the most fragile and where we are honest about what means most and what we are willing to lose. What may seem like a "wild and crazy" thing to do by some may be only routine for others. What one person considers taking a chance may be considered playing it safe by someone else.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it doesn't really matter how high the fence or how far you toss that heart of yours. It isn't even where it lands. It's that split second of terror or excitement as you let go of it and watch it soar and the act of faith it takes to do it all over again.

I walked beside the field
And dragged my hand
along the wooden fence
Until I got a splinter
Then  I turned around and
dragged my other hand
along the wooden fence
