Skywatch Friday - Pines

Prescott 2010_083
I think that I shall never see
billboards as lovely as a tree.
Perhaps unless the billboards fall,
I'll never see a tree at all.

"Song of the Open Road"

Flash 55–Childhood Sweethearts

Flash 55 - Oct 29, 2010

(I had originally planned to post this on another day but decided to use something different instead. I thought I’d see how close I was to a Flash 55, and when I counted the words it was right on so I'm going for it. See other Flash 55 stories here.)

The Beach

It loves me; It loves me not
she left her heart on the beach
so many times she lost count,
but that didn’t stop her
from trying to remember every time
the ocean had washed ashore and
carried it away.

The Last Holiday of Summer (Wave Goodbye)

DSC_3787
Boats bob in the harbor
bidding adieu to the balmy days of summer
with all its pretty baubles, bangles and beads,
and boisterous weekdays;
believing that Fall, boasting brash fiery colors,
and brisk morning walks, comes soon
surely to be followed by winter’s belligerent blustery winds.

“Boo hoo!” bawl the boats.

As do we all.

The Dock

The dock waits patiently.

It waits for boats to putter in after a day
of surfing underneath the sunshine,
cool spray on the bow dancing in between
the rainbows that glisten off the lake,
skipping over waves of laughter like a rock
thrown perfectly across the water by the hand of God.

The boats adore the dock because it is
so stable and secure and never strays,
though the dock pines for watery adventures
it only hears about in orphaned scraps of conversation
that fall upon it as it strains its weathered ear
to eavesdrop over hollow footsteps and rolling laughter
while sea boots trod heavily
- THUMP THUMP THUMP -
toward the local bar and stories full of
What A Fool Believes spill out of the galoshes.

The dock, it seems, is a friend of the boats on a need to know basis only,
and the boats do not believe the dock needs to know so much.
They only seek it out at the end of a long day,
its brightly colored buoys of cheer lining it like
so many fancy baubles as it reaches out
across the harbor to gather the crafts and shield them
from the nightly storm until the sun begins to tease
once more with its playful song.

Deep into the evening after several pints of local ale and
endless dances with any pretty girl who will listen to tall tales of rogue waves
and phantom serpents and lewd jokes that are bellowed
in a language only sailors (and docks) can understand,
they stumble back along the dimly lit familiar path,
eyes closed, mostly,
and crawling into bed are rocked to sleep by the dock
as it cradles them gently like an infant
and creaks a lullaby composed by the sounds along the shore,
time kept by the metronome of the lapping waves.

"Good ole dock," they mumble as they do a different kind of drifting.

Flight of the Angel

The cherub crouched and sought to push
past the surly bonds of earth
to join the birds in free form flight
as day fell into Silent Night.

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
said, "This is where I need you most.
Watch over all the souls who sleep
and comfort those who pass and weep."

"I gave you wings to blanket them
and shield them from the howling wind,
to keep them warm in falling snow
and shade them when the harsh sun glows."

And so the angel spreads its wings
o'er princes, paupers, pawns and kings
Where souls and angels are not bound
to heavenly skies or hallowed ground

Spirits walk this worldly place
in solemn vow and silent grace
Here underground is uppermost
to the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

This is a Theme Thursday post.
I took the photo in a cemetery on a recent trip.

24

The words were poison-tipped and
stung when they landed upon her tender heart;
The looks, like daggers, hit their target before
she had a chance to raise her shield.

She put on what he liked to call her "Chloe" face and
stomped away mumbling words under her breath that she would never say out loud,
tossing things and slamming doors and maybe would have kicked the dog
if they had a dog.

But the next morning he made her breakfast and brought it
to her in bed on a tray with a single rose
(even though he was aware that she had a thing for daisies)
and laughed with her when she dripped syrup on the sheets.

After they had made a proper mess
he stripped the linens and did the laundry
while she tended to her flower garden and smiled thinking
about the blueberry stains that probably never would come out.

That was the morning he went from zero to hero,
from worst to first in a matter of minutes
and became her Jack Bauer again.

A Day Like Any Other Day

It was a day like any other day.
The same sun shined today that shined the day before.
The same sun would shine again tomorrow.

But it would never look just like this.

Gertrude and Heathcliff

"You would if you loved me," she said.
And that's how it all started.
Because he did.

The Ocean

Every time she saw the ocean she had to stick her feet in it -
to feel the seaweed curl around her toes and the sand give way beneath
her until she felt as if she'd been swept up in a dance with Poseidon himself
accompanied by the crashing of symphonic waves and sirens' song.

She was the Ocean's land-locked mistress
Whose spirit rose and fell with her lover's every sigh;
Who dreamed at night of watching her shadow
dance beside her on the beach,
left behind when she went home
like a piece of driftwood dropped upon the shore
waiting for another ride upon the ocean tide.

The Perfect Catch

It had been an exhausting day, Melvillian in nature, as he tried to
reel in the elusive big one from sun up to sun down.

Little did he realize that the perfect catch
had been standing next to him the whole time.

Good music. Fun to watch.

They Say

They say that time heals everything.

Broken bones, broken hearts, broken souls and broken minds.
Perhaps that's so.

How ironic that time is
not something you can
save, grow, move, hurry up

Stop.

Take it
one day
at a
time,
they say

It's nighttime now.
My bed caresses me and only me.
The darkness comes crashing around me
Full of noises and voices I don't recognize.
Not quiet like it should be.

Or maybe light just fades...

What is the difference between a dying dream and a living nightmare?

Diamonds of Sunlight

imgfave

The day began with so many possibilities
That glittered like a thousand diamonds
of sunlight upon the water.
She watched them disappear one by one
As the clock tick - tocked and the shadows grew long
Until the one remaining possibility had transformed into her last and only hope.

By the time the moon had traded places with the sun
Her heart was like a bag of marbles that had broken open
And rattled around the empty cavity of her chest
Until she finally fell asleep and
Dreamed of possibilities sprinkled like diamonds
of sunlight upon the water...

She woke up on the other side of morning
With the scent of salty ocean air hovering around her head and
The faint memory of sea tossed jewels.
A dream she couldn't quite remember
Yet never managed to forget.

Gardening

She'd never been the nurturing type
and so it took a lot of faith for her to
drop the seeds into the ground,
cover them with dirt
and wait for them to grow.

She would often get into a fight
with the garden hose, throw it down
and stomp away when
it refused to acquiesce
to her demands to straighten up.

All she needed was someone
with a little patience
to tell her she would be
more successful if she'd only
turn the water off.

She didn't work well under pressure.

Ship Building

Hers was a face that could launch a thousand ships, and her smile unleashed an ocean of emotion inside of him every time he saw it. She never knew how easily she could take the wind out of his sails with just a few thoughtless words.

It was enough to make him a little dinghy.

Uncomplicated

I take my coffee black
And drink my whiskey neat
I'd rather walk 'round barefoot
Than put shoes on my feet

I've no use for diamonds
Or cultured fancy pearls
I'll leave expensive jewelry
To all the other girls

Just give me dirt and flowers
Some ground in which to plant
I'll clean my dirty hands
When I take my bubble bath

A walk beside the ocean
A simple book or two
Your hand inside my hand
Is all I need from you

Hello, Beautiful

He certainly wasn't the first dog she'd dated, but he had better manners than most, and she'd never have to worry about him leaving the toilet seat up.

When a (snow)Man Loves A (snow)Woman

They met one cold December night and fell in love over a couple of sno cones. Their affair was short and sweet because she melted his heart, which turned out not to be such a good thing.

That just goes to show you that snow news is not always good news.

Spring Poetry

They buried me alive
under a shining sun.
I screamed as the dirt was
tossed over me
But my words fell upon
a breeze that carried
them far away from
anyone who cared to listen.

Darkness fell.
The weight of the world was on me.

Out of earshot.
Out of sight.
Until now.

Did you miss me?

A Teddy Bear Story

They fell in love in the Stuffed Animals Department of FAO Schwarz and met there every afternoon at 2. They were an odd pair - he suffered from bipolar disorder. She was sweet as honey.

One day he didn't show up. And then the next day he didn't show up.

For days she played grizzly scene after grizzly scene in her head as the loneliness became unbearable. She began a relentless search for him, tirelessly plodding on for days and days. Only pausing for nourishment, she would eat until she was stuffed and then forge onward.

She traveled to Vermont and asked every Teddy Bear she met. Once, thinking she spotted him in a Build A Bear Workshop in Chattanooga, she caused near pandemonium as she began screaming out his name. During her travels she came upon a rag tag group who camped out in the woods - a bear, a pig, a donkey, a smart ass owl - and spent the summer with them.

Years have passed. She loves him still and searches for his face in the every crowd, holding out the silent hope that they will someday be together again.
