Right now I am reading the book Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin. The novel is based loosely on the life of Alice Liddell, the little girl who was the main character in Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, the real Alice.
I'm embarrassed to say I have never read Carroll's classic or been interested in the story much, but this kind of book really grabs my attention. I had no idea that Carroll was infatuated with young girls and even took pictures of them scantily clad or, um, not clad at all. Apparently, this was not an uncommon thing to do during the Victorian period. He supposedly got permission from their mothers and made sure after his death that the photos were either destroyed or returned to the children.

Alice I Have Been is the current selection of the Slow Readers Book Club.

That book was a little uncomfortable because of the ongoing theme of that compulsion, but what an awesome book! One of the best-written I've ever read.
Haven't started reading this one yet. Not sure I would be able to make it through it.
I did, however, see the new Alice in Wonderland with mega hunk, Johnny Depp. Loved it!!
