The Ocean

Every time she saw the ocean she had to stick her feet in it -
to feel the seaweed curl around her toes and the sand give way beneath
her until she felt as if she'd been swept up in a dance with Poseidon himself
accompanied by the crashing of symphonic waves and sirens' song.

She was the Ocean's land-locked mistress
Whose spirit rose and fell with her lover's every sigh;
Who dreamed at night of watching her shadow
dance beside her on the beach,
left behind when she went home
like a piece of driftwood dropped upon the shore
waiting for another ride upon the ocean tide.
